Error/Ambiguity re Papal Indulgence for Legionaries of Christ
INDULGENCE AND FORGIVENESS
by ReGAIN
October 31, 2015
ReGAIN is alarmed at the ignorance of Catholic Doctrine demonstrated by media outlets commenting on the ‘plenary indulgence’ granted by Pope Francis to the Legion of Christ as if it were some kind of forgiveness for all the order’s sins and crimes.
Such impulsive, knee-jerk reports cause confusion for the readers, spread ambivalence and false information, thus playing into the hands of the Legion of Christ. They create the impression that all is forgiven to the Legion of Christ by the pope. This is totally simplistic and incorrect.
An indulgence does not forgive or pardon sins, misdeeds or crimes. It is only the “remission of temporal punishment” -a price that must be paid to Divine Justice in the next life for the damage caused by our sins in this life; an indulgence means that reparation time in Purgatory after death will be shortened or totally wiped clean by complying with certain conditions (prayers, alms and good works) laid down by Church authorities. Remember that the excessive and indiscriminate granting of indulgences by the pope provoked in part the revolt of Martin Luther in the 15th century.
Pardon for sins is not given by indulgences. Pardon of sins committed is only given through a personal act of full contrition (in the internal forum –one’s spiritual intimacy) and or by the Sacrament of Penance, “confession” whereby a Catholic, who is truly sorry and repentant, confesses his sins to a priest or bishop.
To the best of our knowledge, indulgences are for individuals, not groups or organizations. What the pope has done is to grant members (individuals) of the Legion of Christ the opportunity to gain an indulgence, partial or total if they comply with certain conditions. I don’t see Pope Francis granting an indulgence to the ORDER of the Legion of Christ as such, as several reports would have us believe.
The Legion of Christ order and some of its leaders have been accused of individual and community sins. If the Legion wants to be forgiven for these it must use the means available to all Catholics as explained above. There is no carte blanche for sins, injustices, lies and deceit.

Let is be clear that the Legionaries have been very vague and lukewarm in seeking pardon and making amends.
They continue to fight tooth and nail in legal cases to avoid responsibility and monetary retribution. Their compensation of sexual abuse victims has been paltry. Only one of the original eight Maciel accusers has received compensation. They continue to drag their feet and butress themselves with powerful lawfirms to avoid payments to victims of other Legionary sex abusers.
Ambiguous and mistaken reporting colludes with the Legion leadership in deceiving the public, especially Catholics, into believing that all is well in Camelot.
The Real Jesuits
By Jean Baptiste Le Sel
- They are the priests who look like the Jesuits used to: the simple black buttonless habit is almost the same; except the waist sash that hangs from the other hip.
- They are the priests who pledge and give allegiance to the pope, the “Holy Father”, just like the Jesuits of old with their special vow.
- They are the priest who don’t smoke, do comb their hair to the right, have no beards or moustaches and always use their Roman collar shirt front with their black tailor-made suit.
- Their spirituality is centered in Christ, over the door of the their novitiate the word of St. Paul, “Christus Vita Vestra”, Christ Your Life is proudly emblazoned; there is a military style: lining up, standing to attention, raising their red and white flag after the papal flag while saluting it singing “Christus vincit, Christus regnat, Christus imperat,” Christ to conquer, Christ to reign, Christ to rule! They are the Roman soldiers of Christ.
- They use the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola –albeit their own version- for their spiritual growth and that of the lay people under their pastoral care.
- They are the priest who, like the Jesuits, believe in twice daily examination of conscience. Their founder also insisted that each member spend an hour every Sunday morning responding to a detailed examination of a particular virtue; a “practical exam”, chosen by his spiritual director, focused on obedience, simplicity, attention to detail, delicate fraternal charity, gossip, generosity…
- The founder described their spirituality as “Contemplative and Conquering.”
- From the 1950s to the 60s their seminarians used to study in Rome with the Jesuits (Gregorian Pontifical University) and the Dominicans (University of St. Thomas, Angelicum) but when these institutions became too liberal, under the influence of Vatican Council II, the order created its own college of higher studies, Regina Apostolorum Pontifical Athenaeum, to avoid contamination.
- In his life time the founder wrote a treatise on how to train priests, Integral Formation of Catholic Priests[1] and the order has gained the admiration of popes and bishops who entrust the training of seminarians to them; seminarian who will be the bishops of the future. The training of seminarians had always been a specialty of the Jesuits.
- In fact the history of this order is closely entwined with the Jesuits whom they have now supplanted. The founder sent his first Mexican recruits to study at the Jesuit run seminary in Comillas, Cantabria, Spain, in the 1940s. The founder even poached some senior seminarians, studying at that institution for the diocesan priesthood, to increase the maturity of his own too young seminarians. These men became priests for the new order and the founder’s faithful followers and generous collaborators: Frs. Antonio Lagoa, Rafael Arumí Blancafort, Rafael Cuena, Faustino Pardo, the blond twins Gustavo and Guillermo (the pedophile) Izquierdo, José María Escribano and Gregorio López: all of whom are now deceased. R.I.P. This was another chapter in the founder’s love-hate relationship with the Society of Jesus.
- Some critics hold that the founder even based his constitutions on the rules of the Jesuits which he purloined from the public library in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Defenders maintain that this holy man, slandered by many, made better use of St. Ignatius’ rules than the order originally founded by the Basque. Only time and the holiness of the Real Jesuits will tell.
- Long the darlings of Pope John Paul II, their constitutions were recently approved by Pope Francis. It is business as usual now for this much maligned order. But the founder had warned his members to be prepared to stave off calumny and detraction.

Chaput Kaputt?
CHAPUT KAPUTT?
Are you, Archbishop Charles Joseph Chaput, above the Clergy Scandal?
After He had dipped the morsel, He took and gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot.
(John 13, 26)
You are about to receive the Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis, in Philadelphia
You will ride with him in the pope mobile.
You will be close to the pope.
You will dine with the pope.
But are you, Archbishop Chaput, free from the clergy scandal?
Archbishop Chaput,
You are a chosen one, as can be gathered from random biographical notes
Archbishop Charles J. Chaput was born September 26, 1944, in Concordia, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Marian DeMarais Chaput. He attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grade School in Concordia and St. Francis Seminary High School in Victoria, Kansas. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin, St. Augustine Province, in 1965.
Archbishop Chaput was ordained Bishop of Rapid City, South Dakota, on July 26, 1988. Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Denver on February 18, 1997, and he was installed on April 7 the same year. As a member of the Prairie Band Potawatomi Tribe, Archbishop Chaput was the second Native American to be ordained a bishop in the United States, and the first Native American archbishop. He chose as his episcopal motto: “As Christ Loved the Church” (Ephesians 5:25).
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Philadelphia on July 19, 2011.
In 1999, building on the efforts of his predecessor in Denver, Archbishop Chaput…..
Archbishop Chaput served the Holy See as an Apostolic Visitor to U.S. seminaries, (2005 – 2006); the Diocese of Toowoomba, Australia, (2007); and
- the Legion of Christ for Canada and the United States, (2009}
BUT DID YOU DO YOUR DUTY WHEN INVESTIGATING THE LEGIONARIES OF CHRIST?
- Were you in any way behooven to Pedophile Founder, Fr. Marcial Maciel, and the Legion leadership?
- Did they have anything “on you” which prevented you from carrying out a thorough investigation?
- In 2011, you were a accused of siding with a monsignor who had practiced clergy sex abuse cover up
In October 2011 SNAP Victims blast(ed Archbishop) Chaput for supporting accused criminal [1] (priest diocesan official)
<For the second time, Philly’s new archbishop has expressed clear support for a credibly accused priest who may soon be deemed a criminal for enabling child sex crimes while apparently expressing no concern for vulnerable kids, wounded adults or learning the truth in court about an alleged criminal.
In neither case, as best we can tell, did Chaput express even a scintilla of worry for kids who are at risk today because of Lynn’s actions, adults who are suffering today because of Lynn’s actions. Nor has Chaput ever, as best we can tell, issued a real call for victims, witnesses and whistleblowers to come forward, so that the case involving Lynn be resolved with as much information as possible.
Chaput has shown his true colors. Like his brother bishops, he’s first, foremost and always a company man who quickly sides with accused clerics over vulnerable kids and wounded adults.
A caring shepherd would have led by example and urged his staff and supporters to be open-minded, rather than making insensitive comments that will only further deter victims, witnesses, and whistleblowers from reporting known and suspected child sex crimes and cover ups.
Chaput could have said “It’s important that we not say or do anything that might prejudice the criminal proceedings. It’s important that we stay open-minded and resist the temptation to automatically back our brother priest. It’s important that we reach out to others who may have knowledge of how Lynn dealt with abuse allegations and admissions, and urge those people to call the prosecutor.”
He apparently said none of this. Instead, he sent church employees the same clear and disturbing message bishops have sent church employees for decades: “No matter how seriously you’re accused of committing or concealing child sex crimes, we in the Catholic hierarchy will back you.”
This was the case of Philadelphia Archdiocese Monsignor Lynn who was sentenced to three years in prison for covering up clergy sex abuse and transferring offenders from parish to parish”.[2]
- You made your musical director resign in June, 2015[3].
SHOULDN’T YOU RETIRE ALSO, BEFORE THE TRUTH COMES OUT ABOUT YOUR OWN PECCADILLOES?
