Legionary Spin Foiled Again

Legionaries Apologize That They Acted Too Late

Very recently Associated Press stated that the Legion confirmed it had referred seven cases of alleged abuse to the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith This statement from the Legion gave the impression that the Legion was on top of the situation and was cooperating with the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.
According to the AVLCRC, Asociacion de Ayuda a los Afectados por la Ensenanzas del Grupo Religioso Legionarios de Cristo “Association of Help for those affected by the teaching of the religious group Legionaries of Christ” they (not the Legion) were the ones who reported to the CDF regarding the abuse by the seven Legionary priests. According to this Spanish victims’ group, they reported the abuse two years ago to the head of the Legion, Father Alvaro Corcuera. When he failed to respond, they reported it to Cardinal DePaolis, who is overseeing the reform process. Then, when he failed to take action, they went to the CDF (Congregations for the Doctrine of the Faith) in the Vatican.

As news agencies began to report this story another bombshell dropped. The most visible Legionary priest, Rev Thomas D Williams, Legionary moral theologian, TV personality and author of more than a dozen books, including one called Knowing Right From Wrong: A Christian Guide to Conscience. admitted that he had fathered a child some time ago. There were few details provided.

ReGAIN sources (unconfirmed) have provided some information that the incident most likely happened around 2000, when Father Williams was rector at Legionary headquarters in Rome, Via Aurelia 677 (the same place where Father Maciel had abused seminarians). As rector, he would have had much more freedom of movement than the regular members, who had to abide by the community rules.

Apparently, Father Williams has denied that it was one of his students or anyone under his spiritual direction. Was it then a daughter of a benefactor perhaps or a daughter of a Regnum Christi member, or a visitor or someone from a prominent Catholic family? Was she married or single? These sort of details are being kept secret because of privacy concerns for those involved.

We share Cardinal DePaolis’ concern for the private lives involved in this new scandal and we also share in his relief that this time there were no laws broken (i.e. no children molested). Being human, we can’t help but wonder about some of the details as questions go through our minds about who the mother is, what is her relationship to the Regnum Christi Movement and how old is she, was she married or single. It is becoming more difficult to keep secrets these days when things do happen.

Reuters Click Here for Reuters Article has identified that the Legion and Cardinal DePaolis knew for months about Father Williams having fathered a child. Most people are willing to forgive the handsome, irresistible Father Williams for being possibly victimized by some seductive beautiful young lady. Even Cardinal DePaolis has shown acceptance of Father William’s indiscretions by his statement: There is a need to be careful in cases like this. It concerns a private life. These things happen these days, unfortunately.

Yes, these things do happen and we are all sinners. However, more shocking than the story of the Legion’s most prominent and visible theologian having fathered a child is the obvious conclusion that the Legion did whatever was necessary to cover up the facts for as long as they could.

Based on the Reuters story, Cardinal Velasio De Paolis said I found out about it this yearWhen asked (by Reuters) if he meant since the beginning of this year, he said yes.

In a later report May 17 by the Catholic News Agency Click Here the Legion apologized for not acting more quickly in the case of Father Thomas Williams.

There is a parallel here to the way things unfolded in 2009. The Legionary founder, Father Marcial Maciel had been disgraced twice by the Vatican, first in 2006 when he was advised to lead a quiet life of repentance and prayer and no longer practice his priesthood or speak publically and again after he died when the Vatican communique was issued in May 2010 following investigations to determine what effect his actions had had on the Legion structure.

The Legion at the time decided they could no longer defend their founder’s name. However, they carefully chose their words about his transgressions to focus on the long and stable relationship that he had with a woman. They were extremely tight lipped about any mention of molestation of children who had been in his care even though a significant number of ex Legionaries had been seeking justice for decades. The Legion tried to concentrate focus on the (relatively normal and acceptable) relationship that he had with a woman.

There were only a few days between the release of the recent (May 2012) story about charges of sexual abuse of minors by Legionary priests and the admissions by Father Williams that he had impregnated a woman. Is it a coincidence that the images of children being sexually molested by a number of Legionary priests was (again) quickly washed away by the image of one of the most handsome Legionary priests having a moment of weakness with a woman? Certainly it is easier for us to forgive in our hearts the popular Legionary favorite than it is to forgive seven unknown priests that some might think of as lechers, who took advantage of innocent children.

Is the reform working? Have the old guard Legionary leaders who remain in positions of authority to this day had a change of heart and truly picked up the spirit of reform? So far we have seen very little evidence that there is any desire to change. On the other hand there has been a lot of evidence to show that spin control and damage control teams are keeping themselves quite busy.

Piecing together a chronology of the reports we have heard, it appears that events proceeded something like this:

Fr’s indiscretion happened around 2000 when he was rector at the Legion headquarters in Rome, Via Aurelia 677 *#40;the same place where in the 1950’s Fr. Maciel had abused his seminarians*#41;. As rector he would have had much more freedom of movement than regular members having to abide by ‘community rules’.

Who was the woman? He denied it was a student of his or a person under his spiritual direction; is he telling the truth? If not them who? Not a prostitute. What other females could he meet? A daughter of a benefactor, daughter of a member of the Regnum Christi, daughter of a visitor, prominent Catholic family…?

when superiors find out about it around that time they take him out of Rome and send to Cheshire waiting for things to cool down. Legion does ‘damage control’ with girl’s parents.

When the coast is clear Fr. William returns to Rome and resumes his regular duties, things go back to normal until somebody spills the beans to the CDF which takes it seriously; Legion is approached by AP regarding the accusation; they make Fr. W fess up and take the rap.

This helps to take the pressure off the pedophile charges against other priests; just like they tried to have Maciel’s mistresses take the heat of his pedophilia “that kind of backfired”

The Super Catholic Syndrome

The New Oxford Review published an article Click Here that refers to a new term Super Catholics? that has been coined to describe members of Catholic groups that are cult like and that set themselves up as being somehow an elite part of the Church yet remain isolated from others with a polarized us – vs. – them mentality.

The article mentions the secrecy, servile obedience, financial irregularities and spiritual abuse associated with the Legionaries of Christ and how it and Regnum Christi are back in the media spotlight because of the resignation of six editors of Zenit (refer to previous ReGAIN article) and the long, drawn-out Vatican investigation of the order and the Regnum Christi movement.

The article refers to the founder’s bizarre double life as a pedophile priest and deadbeat dad? and the plight of the consecrated women, who have no legal status in the Church and who may be in a precarious position as they have none of the legal protections that are normally provided for religious sisters.

The article describes further details of the unfortunate situation the consecrated women are in after having made solemn promises (similar to the vows that nuns make) and having agreed to renounce their decision making capacity.

The Vatican commissioner, Cardinal DePaolis has acknowledged that the issues relating to their personal and community life are many and challenging. One of these issues that the article refers to as being strange? is that the consecration state is not necessarily permanent – it may be ended easily with no obligation to provide for financial or other needs of women who are no longer wanted.

The New Oxford Review questions how it is that new orders and movements are able to rise up and operate as parallel churches, appearing to be healthy organizations within the Church but in reality having self-serving agendas.

ReGAIN Comment:

The concept of being super Catholics? does not fit with scriptures. Our salvation is a gift. Individuals or groups of people who claim to be more saved than others (us vs. them) fail to fully understand Jesus’ message. Christian spirituality does not encourage us to be one-up on others but rather to develop our own personal relationship with Jesus and to use our God given talents to serve Him.

The bible does not teach us to lord it over others who are less holy than us. In fact Jesus spoke out against the attitude of the Scribes and Pharisees, who also had many rules to suit all occasions but lacked humility.

For years, ReGAIN and several other websites and blogs have provided information and testimonies from former consecrated (3gf) members about the lopsided agreement, whereby dedicated and trusting people offer everything they have and are in exchange for being provided with the essential requirements of life, leading a form of religious life similar to that of a religious sister but that is only recognized within their own movement should they decide to leave or be suddenly be forced to leave and go elsewhere. If the 3gf consecrated ladies are truly brides of Christ, then how is it that they can end such relationship simply by writing to a local bishop? An even more controversial question is why is it allowable for the movement to suddenly discharge one of Jesus’ brides suddenly and without notice or warning if it is decided that one of the women does not have a vocation after all?. Are the many hundreds of former 3gf consecrated women to be considered as Jesus’ exes?

We hope that the reform process includes provisions to ensure that before anyone makes a commitment to enter a formation program, they are made fully aware of all the rules they will have to follow and that they fully understand that in the past women have been terminated because of serious illness or any reason after years of service without notice and without adequate financial assistance and have found that the movement has had no obligation to provide for them in any way.

Vatican Commissioner DePaolis Says Regnum Christi Rules Are Invalid

Nicole Winfield of the Associated Press has written another article about the way of life for the “consecrated” (3gf) Regnum Christi women <href=http://old.news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20111124/ap_on_re_eu/eu_vatican_legion_of_christ>Click Herethat provides new information as a follow-up to the visitation that was concluded previously this year under Vatican Commissioner Cardinal Velasio DePaolis.

Except for the few general regulations contained in the constitution that was reviewed in 2004, most of the rules that the 3gf women live by (there are many of these that govern everything right down to trivialities such as how to eat a piece of bread) have been declared by Cardinal De Paolis as having no legal status since they were never officially approved.

Although some of the women who are required to live by these rules are willing to defend them as being “endearing” or “unifying”, critics claim that the excessiveness of rules masks a lack of spirituality and constitutes a red flag about the cult-like nature of the movement.

The Vatican commissioner has ordered that the rules be drastically whittled down. Nicole Winfield in her article states that some former members have complained that they were told that disobeying any one of the rules was tantamount to disobeying God’s will – a heavy onus that created an unhealthy striving for perfection over the most meaningless of norms.

ReGAIN Comment

ReGAIN for years has published many articles and testimonies about the regimented way of life that the women are gradually subjected to after entering the Third Level or 3gf “consecrated life”. Former members have identified that there were different versions of rules and that most of them were kept secret from the outside world.

Finally, someone from the Vatican has reviewed all of the rules and norms that are used to form the women and will now likely outlaw those that reduce individuality and tend to mold people to become images of each other. In some of the ReGAIN articles included on the topic of “Cult Like Features”, the militaristic rules are considered to be part of “behaviour control” which cult expert Steve Hassan includes as one of the four key elements of mind control.

At ReGAIN, we are pleased to see any changes that will reduce the degree of power and control that is exerted over these dedicated women, many of whom had been taught that everything they said and did had been fully approved by the Vatican. It is now becoming apparent that the Vatican was hardly aware of the existence of the 3gf women, who sincerely believed that they were brides of Christ.

Power Money and Mind Control

Could power, money and mind control be the missing charisms for the Legion and for Regnum Christi? The New Oxford Review opines that these “three concepts best describe the modus operandi of the Legion.”

The article confirms recent statements made by the Associated Press regarding the voluntary renouncement of decision making capacity leading to a “zombie” like existence and mentions the excessive power that has been concentrated in the hands of two leaders, particularly Luis Garza Medina. It describes the difficulties facing Cardinal Designate DePaolis as he moves ahead with his mission to resurrect the Legion (and Regnum Christi) and questions how they will be able to attract new members.

An excellent example was provided of the power plays that were utilised by Fr. Maciel and his very powerful and influential associates, including the heads of multinational companies and politicians who went to great lengths to save Fr. Maciel?s reputation and keep the truth from becoming publicly aired in Mexico.

Second Letter From Delegate October 20, 2010

Recently appointed Cardinal elect Velasio DePaolis has written a letter to the Legionaries of Christ and the consecrated women of Regnum Christi that has shocked and disappointed any critics or family members who were anticipating major changes to be made by the Apostolic Delegate to the Legion or to Regnum Christi in the near future.

The Delegate refers to the good that the Legion has done and is still doing, points out that the Legion has been approved by the Church, verifies that it is a work of God, points out that it is difficult to be sure that the leaders of the Legion knew anything about the founder’s misdeeds and concludes that the (Legion) charism is sufficiently clear and precise.

The original letter was written in Italian and a translation of this letter has been posted on Regnum Christi?s website at:
De Paolis Second Letter

It would seem that the Church is enabling and encouraging the Legion and Regnum Christi to continue business as usual. The recruiting, ordinations and consecrations are still happening.

The affirming tone of the letter was surprising to many and raises questions about what the Vatican intends to do or to not do in the reform process. One thing is obvious. The Vatican does not intend to come in with a big stick and clean house. The Legionary leaders are going to have to fix things up themselves and not just sit by idly waiting for the Church to impose changes. Time will tell if they are capable of achieving the necessary positive changes to create a more healthy environment.
