Macielism Lives – LC Priest Fr. Peter F. Byrne L.C. Apologizes For Legion Behavior

Life-After-RC Click Here has provided an English translation of a letter submitted by a Legionary priest, Peter Byrne apologizing to Msgr Justo for calumnies and lies that he suffered at the hands of the founder of his congregation, the Legionaries of Christ and his collaborators.

The letter, dated April 22, 2012 expresses a feeling of shame Father Byrne experienced on behalf of his congregation.

The writer goes on to say that macielism has not yet been banished in the Legion and offers his opinion that those who did cooperate with the founder are still being covered for. He provides examples of ways in which the old leaders continue the same lack of transparency and dishonesty that they learned from the founder. Father Byrne states that seminarians are still taught that their founder, Father Marcial Maciel was a prophet and that they still are obliged to have a vow of humility? that binds them to denounce their Legionary brothers.

ReGAIN Comment:
For anyone inside or outside the Legion or Regnum Christi who wishes to see true reform, this letter reveals several indications that there is little or no will for positive change in the Legion. One statement from the letter reads as follows:

Without impunity, seminarians in Rome are still taught that Maciel was a prophet. They still have a vow of humility by which religious swear before God to denounce their brothers.

Pope Benedict XVI referred to the Legion founder as a false prophet. The Vatican communique stated that he was unscrupulous and without religious sentiment. If the Legionary leadership is indeed continuing to encourage seminarians to in any way continue to idolize their false prophet? founder there is little hope that the reform process is moving in a positive direction. Jesus taught that we should beware of false prophets?. (Matthew 7:15)

It is disturbing to hear that the practice of informing on fellow seminarians who break Legionary rules is still happening. This is a typical method of mind control that is used by typical destructive cult groups to force people to discourage individuality.

The letter goes on to say:
the majority of the macielistic leadership continues to govern the Legion and with the same contrivances that they learned from the founder: falsified elections, half truths, clarifications? of Vatican authorities, lack of transparency in economic affairs, and, overall, blindness towards those who were harmed by the crimes of this man and his followers.

And further on:
The hope was that those who covered up for Maciel within the congregation and inside the Vatican would be barred from office. It is painful that the suggestion was not considered opportune and the majority of those who signed the letter have now left the congregation?

The letter written by Peter Burne, LC, who remains on the inside demonstrates anew that there has been little change in the attitudes and cult like practices that have prevailed not just during Father Maciel’s decades of leadership but continuing right up to the present moment. Had this letter been written in isolation it might be considered simply as an expression of one person’s opinions and feelings. Taken together with the many similar letters written by disillusioned Legionaries and consecrated Regnum Christi women since the major scandal broke in 2009 it makes a discouraging statement of the present state of affairs. Even under the watchful eye of the Vatican the same old ways and attitudes prevail.

The letter serves to demonstrate that those Legionaries who really wanted reform have left and that one main reason why they departed was because they got tired of waiting as the foxes retained their tight control of the hen house.

Macielism lives on through the leaders who were selected and formed by the false prophet.

This raises a question for those whose lives are controlled within the LC / RC system:

If the teachings and practices of a false prophet have withstood several Vatican investigations and continue while a Vatican delegate with sweeping powers presides and as those who wished for changes head for the exit doors, what will the environment be like after the constitutions are rewritten and the commissioner leaves?

Were Canon Laws Altered to Soften Punishment For Father Maciel?

A startling accusation was made by Jose Barba in the book “The Will Not To Know,” that he co-authored along with Alberto Athie, a former priest who directed a Mexican bishop’s charity and Fernando M. Gonzalez, a scholar in Mexico City who was the author of a biography of Maciel. This book has been published by a Mexico City imprint of Random House international. Jose Barba holds a doctorate from Harvard in Latin American studies,

Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone is the current Secretary of State. If the accusations leveled were proven to be true, it would be somewhat of a black eye for the present hierarchy.

The National Catholic Reporter reported in 2009 that Father Maciel gave $10,000 to Cardinal Clemente Micara, the vicar of Rome, in 1946, shortly after the end of World War 2. At the time, this represented an enormous sum of money. Later in 1959, Cardinal Micara signed the order reinstating Father Maciel in 1959 after Pius XII’s death. Jason Berry has authored several articles on the subject of how the Legionary founder used influence peddling to gain support from powerful members of the Vatican.

Following is an English translation of the manifesto issued by Jose Barba regarding The Will to Not Know book.

Manifesto on the Occasion of Pope Benedict XVI’S Visit to Mexico
Deceased are, together with our hopes of truth and justice in the Church, several of the former Legionaries of Christ who, together with the signers of the open letter to your predecessor, John Paul II, hoped since 1997 to receive an answer to that message. Instead they were ignored or reprehended by Catholic authorities. Later we trusted that truth, charity, and our rights would prevail in our canonical case against Fr. Maciel which we presented in Rome on October 17th 1998 to the Sacred Congregation for the Faith over which Your Holiness presided at that time.

Scarcely twenty months ago Your Holiness told reporter Peter Seewald “only around the year 2000 did we have any concrete clues (regarding the accusations against Fr. Marcial Maciel).” But we, following the spirit of the forgotten Council of Sardica, had sent a letter to John Paul II fifteen years before. The letter was in fact delivered to the Vatican by the then Apostolic Nuncio, Justo Mullor Garcia, to be handed to the pope. In that letter we laid out our convictions with a respectful and trusting attitude; and in that letter we also made ourselves available for questioning and judgment so the truth could be known; for the good of society and the Church we wanted Marcial Maciel and us to be the subjects of a canonical process.

We asked John Paul II whether, in historical retrospect, the canonical trial of the Legion of Christ founder would be too onerous a task. And we went so far as to say “for many reasons it would be a shame for the Church not to seek the truth in such a grave matter” Because by not seeking the truth diligently and by not doing justice, the scandal would spread wider and the Magisterium’s credibility would be questioned by many. And we could not understand how the Church’s ancient wisdom could have been deceived so easily, at such high levels of the Hierarchy, for such a long time, in so many places, in the face so many victims and so many complaints.

But we were not listened to or believed at the right time. For a long time we were ignored for being simple rank and file members of the Church. That is why we, as regular Christians, wish that the words of a German theologian well known to you were taken into account: “Beside, before and above the ministerial hierarchy there is in God’s ministry an often hidden hierarchy of the spirit. There exists a hierarchy of holiness which is not the same as and runs parallel to the ministerial hierarchy. Nearness to God is not a class privilege.” (Karl Rahner)

For You, in your conversation with Peter Seewald, Marcial Maciel was an enigma. For us the problem is the failure of the centuries old wisdom of a Church that did not decipher the enigma in time nor has it resolved the institutional metastasis of its works; the problem of a Church intimidated by hidden but nevertheless very real powers. Your Holiness, scandalous too is the presence among the higher clergy of pastors who live disorderly lives tolerated by the Church; for telling the truth about Marcial Maciel we were criminally attacked by them. Concretely, the Mexican episcopal conference, composed in its majority by cowards, has shown no commitment to this case and has been irresponsible and even servile.

We have carefully analyzed the trajectory of our case before the Vatican, especially from 1997 on. We have also studied in great detail documents regarding the Maciel case that were recently handed over to us from inside the Church; our examination of such documents had led us to believe that they were purposely kept hidden in the Vatican; it is humanly inconceivable that the prefects and heads of the Vatican departments in charge of such grave matters would not have been aware of their existence and content. It has been a case of suggestio falsi (false suggestion) and suppressio veri (suppression of truth).

We never received an answer to our rightful complaints lodged according to the rules of the Church’s own Canon Law. And, after reprehending us several times for expressing our opinions publicly in the secular media it is ironic that only through these same media did we learn about the ambiguous and confusing decisions taken by the Vatican regarding the Maciel case. We repeat that we presented our case on October 17th 1998 to the Sacred Congregation of the Faith which at that time was directly under your supervision as prefect (executive director). In this context we cannot but doubt and feel disconcerted by the decree De Delictis Gravioribus (Regarding Serious Crimes)signed by Your Holiness on May 18, 2001; in this decree a very important clause is modified, canon 1378, which had ruled that there was no statute of limitations in the case of a priest guilty of solicitation in confession. The law was applied retroactively and thus affected the complaint we had lodged against Fr. Maciel three years previously on February 18, 1998 through our lawyer Martha Wegan. The change in fact favored the depraved Fr. Marcial Maciel as it left us at a serious disadvantage in pursuing our case against him.

The axiom cited by some clergy to the effect that “it is better that eight innocent men suffer injustice rather than thousands of Catholic lose their faith” has certainly not helped the manifestation of truth, or the exercise of charity or the triumph of justice. Since the 1990s many members have left the Church and many others find it hard to continue to belong and be faithful. Their disappointment has increased as they experience clear pragmatism and moral relativism despite denials by some Vatican spokespersons.

These objective realities, carefully studied and analyzed during years of duress, have demonstrated that more than respect for the rights of the human person, it has been public outcry and the weight of world-wide secular opinion that have been the determining factors in ever so slowly modifying the Hierarchy’s stubborn denial. Many of us faithful expected clarity and reasons to trust. On the contrary we have seen almost systematic ambiguity which, together with contradictions between orthodox doctrine and real praxis, has led us to internal confusion and painful spiritual malaise.

We believe, Your Holiness, with greater conviction than ever, what we expressed to Your Predecessor in our 1997 open letter: “We firmly hold that only a just, transparent and brave Christianity will win the real and active respect of young and old, of intelligent and brave men and women; of people who are healthily critical, living as they do in a shallow world of mass demonstrations, sheep-like movements, and of those who join good causes which often do not lead to effective justice.”

We are saddened that our Catholicism has been affected by the clear structural sin of an indifferent Church; paradoxically, on the other hand, the awareness of our rights and obligations as Christians and citizens has grown stronger under hurtful assault. That is why we have spoken and written. May God, who cannot be deceived and sees into the depths of our souls, and who enlightens our minds and hearts, grant us an historic revision, generous and courageous, regarding the truth of our revelations as former Legionaries of Christ: great is the damage caused to the Church by her presumably but false friends. Only He knows whether we have been chosen by Him as his instruments. In any case, You were given the opportunity to accept this truth. You, Your Holiness, were given the opportunity to accept us.

Letter from Former RC Director Who Authored New Book The Kingdom of Maciel To Current R C Consecrated Members and Her Interview With Milenio

After a total of twelve years with Regnum Christi, Nelly Ramirez Mota Velasco, formerly a director of a house of consecrated 3gf members came to realize that there was perverse conduct within the Legion and decided to leave in 2009. Since then she has written a book in Spanish entitled The Kingdom of Maciel, in which she offers her testimony describing life inside the Legionaries of Christ and many of the characteristics that define this organization as a cult phenomenon within the Catholic Church.

Following is an English translation of the text of a letter that the author sent to the current consecrated members of Regnum Christi regarding her new book.

Thy Kingdom Come!

Mexico City, February 25, 2011

Dearly beloved in Christ:

First of all, allow me extend a greeting full of affection and gratitude for all that I received from you during my passage through consecrated life in the Regnum Christi movement. I continue to remain in contact with the many of you with whom I have a true friendship, and with those of you with whom I share the grand ideals that have nourished my life.

I am taking the opportunity to write you these few lines in response to information circulating in some quarters about the book The Kingdom of Marcial Maciel, which I have just finished writing, and which will soon be in bookstores.

In contrast to what is being said in some quarters, I can assure you that this book was not born out of resentment, of which there is none, but rather out of my commitment to truth and to you. I have done this with all the Christian love and respect for truth that you deserve. I am placing it in your hands, offering to you knowledge based on facts, so that together we may seek what it is the Lord expects of us in the renewal of the Regnum Christi Movement, rising above shady dealings and untruths.

I have avoided the purely morbid and harmful, and have only collected solid and verifiable testimonies. Unfortunately, I have had to raise some negative issues, but you will see that I take no delight in doing so. I raise them as things that we have to overcome, and I am convinced that we can overcome them.

In the book I have collected many painful testimonies from persons both near and dear because it seemed to me that this would help to provide a comprehensive point of view, so different from the idyllic and utopian visions with which we have lived. I have maintained the anonymity of anyone who asked me to do so, and have always tried to be sincere in expressing what I think. Like any human being I may have many faults, which you will no doubt go on discovering, but I assure you that I have researched and verified all the assertions I make, always consulting with the men and women religious specialists in the various subjects with which I was dealing. I ask forgiveness from those who may feel offended or impacted. It was not my intention to do harm to anyone.

I promise to send your team a copy so that you may judge for yourselves.

With that, I bid you farewell, wishing you a free and committed experience in your consecration to God, one devoid of snares or manipulations.

I can assure you of a very special place in my heart and in my prayers, hoping for the same in yours.

Most affectionately yours in Christ and the Movement,
Nelly Ramirez Mota Velasco

On a visit in Madrid, the author spoke with MILENIO about her experiences in the Legion.

Following is an English translation of her interview with Milenio:

Why did you write this book?

I got the idea after seeing that within the Legion there was no awareness of the realities and the truth about Marcial Maciel’s life. By necessity you have to be aware that something is bad before it can be changed. What I have done in essence is to support the condemnation that Pope Benedict XVI made in a May 1, 2010 statement in that talks about how Maciel’s conduct impacted the structure and life of the movement. The objective of my book is to explain how this perverse conduct pervades the Legion.

Was writing the book therapeutic after dredging up all the muck?
Yes. It always helps to be able to express things on a personal level – the work of investigating, of talking to other people. . . who were explaining to me how we deviated from church doctrine, how we no longer had personal freedom, and how there was no respect for intimacy.

When did you realize that things in the Legion were not as you had thought, and did they want to make you think otherwise?
I realized it as I was leaving. I had been reassigned to Madrid. Previously, I had been a directress for seven years in Leon (Mexico). I received this assignment, and I went home for a month and a half, but I dragged the time out because I had begun to receive information, and things were not adding up. It was then, in the summer of 2009, that I began my investigation, and had the idea of writing a book?.

How did your uneasiness lead you to begin investigating?
I had received information from outside. I also felt a strong desire for change in the institution. I wanted to know whom I was standing up for. After getting the news about Maciel, I was interested in knowing everything on a deeper level, and then to find out if it was consistent with my ideals. I never got to Madrid. I stayed at home because I realized how things were?.

Whom did you tell that you would not be going to Madrid?
My directors. They respected me, and I did not give any explanations. I said only that I felt uneasy, and that I was staying in Mexico.

Did you have any fear in writing this book? Did you receive threats before or after?
Not threats against my life. But several legionaries visited members of my family to try to convince them that what I was doing was unnecessary because they knew that I was writing something, but not what it was exactly. Previously there had been some moral blackmail. The told me things like, As you judge, so shall you be judged. They told me that Jesus Christ did not judge, and therefore neither should I?.

What is the reaction among Legionaries about the book’s publication?
It varies. There is one group that wants to see a renewal, that is aware of the realities, and another that is steadfast, that thinks any change is an affront to God. I believe that, within the culture of the Legion, a book like this is seen as an act of aggression, which it is not. It is simply a proposal for change, and my objective is to facilitate an internal dialogue. They also told me that they would ask God to forgive me for writing this book.

What did you lose by being in the Legion for twelve years?
I would rather focus on what I have gained by leaving. I have regained my freedom, the closeness to my family, the opportunity to share with friends what I am feeling inside, and above all the power to make my own decisions. That is a blessing?.

What form does brainwashing take within the organization?
You live in a type of, quote-unquote, free enslavement. The statutes say that obedience means surrendering your judgment and free will. But in the church it is not like that because you have the ability to differ, to not surrender your judgment. You are free to decide if something makes sense to you or not, and that is the value in obedience. In the case of the Legion, that is not the way it is, because even before you approach your superior, you have already surrendered your judgment. They can ask things of you that are against the law, against your conscience, but out of wanting to please God, you accept it.

How does the family come into play?
The rules are very strict. The first year you can talk with them only seven times. After that, you can see them twice a year. You really live a life disconnected from their troubles, from what a family is. You live separated from reality. They completely control you, they read your emails and letters, you have to ask permission to make a phone call, etc.

Do they expect you to meet certain monetary quotas?
There is an annual quota for the consecrated women, but it is not obligatory. But it is a congregation that encourages you to request financial donations. The annual quota for each consecrated is $7,000. In each center they ask for 40% of the annual budget, more than the benefactors contribute, more than they receive?.

Did you know Maciel personally?
Well, I don’t think I saw him more that four times. . . he would only pass by and wave?.

Did he impress you?
Yes, a lot. But also because of all attention surrounding him. Everyone idealized him. They would say, “Here comes the saint, the great one… They would tell us stories about how he had helped others, how he did not have time to do anything but pray. Later you realized that he did not pray, and did not even celebrate mass?.

Did it ever occur to you that he might be a pedophile? Did you hear rumors, or anything else?
I never thought he could be a pedophile or homosexual, or that he would misuse money. To me he was a saint, a martyr in life. . . In 1997 I found out about the sexual abuse, but I never believed it. I thought it was another test for him?.

Did you know his daughter lives here in Madrid?
I found out in 2009. It was a painful moment, not only for the daughter, but for everyone else as well. That was when I began to ask questions. For example, why was this man so idolized?

Is it enough to reform the Legionaries of Christ?
There is an entirely new road to be traveled, as an institution and at the personal level, by each member and by the movement. . .there is an important road to be traveled with the victims.

After everything you have experienced, do you still believe in the church?
I believe there is a need to rediscover it. I believe in the church because there were other priests who took me by the hand to help me through this process of change?.

ReGAIN expects that this book because it has been written by one of their own will have an impact on those consecrated women especially in Mexico, who are trying to sort out the confusing situation they are in and help them to discover the truth.

Vatican Enroll Legion’s Help to Conquer The Media

English translation of French article in Le Canard Enchaine? on Feb. 23, 2011 with explanations from Xavier Leger.

Our friend Xavier Leger has sent us an article that appeared in Le Canard Enchaine,on Feb. 23, 2011.

For those who are unfamiliar with French media, Xavier has vouched for the credibility of this source. He has told us that the Canard Enchaine is not a tabloid type newspaper. He advises that usually, it is the official channel to bring some problematic information to light, that it is considered a good source of political information and that even some bishops read it. Even if their sources are sure, we should consider that the tone of its articles are usually caustic and a bit caricatural.

Following is the best translation we have available from French to English. We felt that some of the clarity of meaning had been lost in translation and asked Xavier to clarify this for us.

The Vatican?s Inner Circle

Almost 80 wealthy businessmen, captains of industry, or directors of multi-national corporations, met on January 22 and 23 at the Vatican. This international religious souvenir conference was the result of an invitation from the foul smelling Legionaries of Christ. Housed in the Domus Santa Maria, a six-story building located so close to St. Peter?s Basilica you can smell the incense, the participants did not travel all that way only to say two Our Father?s and three Hail Mary?s.

The purpose of this conclave: to squeeze millions of Euros out of them in order to help the church meet the challenge of a renewed presence in the media landscape. Among them were several French patrons, including Claude Bebear (honorary president of AXA), Michel-Yves Bollore (older brother of Vincent), Jean-Francois Henin (former director of Credit Lyonnais), and Gonzague de Blignieres (CEO of Barclays Private Equity).

Sex and the Internet
These spiritual heirs of Fr. Marcial Maciel were given the responsibility of bringing together this papal inner circle, and of organizing the event. The Mexican priest, who founded the Legionaries of Christ in 1941 and passed away quietly in 2008, succumbed to evil temptations throughout his life. Enthusiastically so, since he was involved with at least two women and three children. As though possessed by the devil, this odd cleric was equal parts drug addict, plagiarist and pedophile.

It took the church more than sixty years to realize all this and to condemn his serious and immoral conduct. All the while, the establishment of a vast system of corruption festering in the Vatican allowed Fr. Maciel to obtain favors from the Roman curia. For charitable purposes, no doubt.

Quickly coming off smelling like a holy rose after the condemnation of their spiritual leader, the Legionaries of Christ are being entrusted by the Vatican with a sacred mission. They must evangelize the masses through modern and reliable media. That is why they need the money.

Small Donors or Employers
It was his hagiographer, the aptly named Jesus Colina, director of the Catholic news agency Zenit, who welcomed the pious employers. At this first Catholic Davos, the wealthy attendees are being invited to contribute, by means of foundation grants, to the creation of large Catholic media enterprises.

Bebear has written a check for one million euros. In turn Henin has shelled out 1.2 million to obtain God?s grace. These initial checks will be used to launch and operate an internet platform. There is some urgency. A document sent to participants states, The foundation of our civilization is at risk. Heavens!

As a final effort to persuade them, these Catholic sponsors sensitive to the cause are entitled to one private evening (visit) to the Sistine Chapel, a dinner in the prestigious surroundings of the Vatican Museum, a religious talk with Fr. Lombardi, spokesmanfor the pope, and to top it all off, an angelus with the Holy Father, Benedict XVI.

But there is always a kill-joy. Not unexpectedly, the slick and holy are unhappy. It?s a mafia, confesses a cardinal. Maciel may be gone, but his methods have survived him.

A Roman prelate, as always under the secrecy of the confessional, believes that the Legionaries are taking advantage of the current weakness of the pope to reclaim their small business interests. And yet, that was why Cardinal Ratzinger (later Benedict XVI) chased them out of Rome.

While undoubtedly breaking with a certain Mafia tradition, they have donned a third philosophical cassock: An octopus, like the Phoenix, will always rise again. After all, it is for the greater glory of God.

Didier Hassoux.

ReGAIN Comments:
Overall, we would be concerned that the Legion, which has been under investigation and reform for some time now being entrusted to take a major role in raising enormous amounts of money from wealthy and powerful business people and in so doing they enter into a more intimate financial relationship with the most powerful people in the hierarchy. Xavier agreed that this is so and adds that the Legion would be buying the Church in some way.

Xavier explained the title: le premier cercle fricard du Vatican. The premier cercledoes not translate exactly to mean inner circle in English. It simply means the people who are physically around someone. Fricard is a slang word meaning very rich.

The translation refers to a renewed presence in the media landscape and the stated reason for this is to evangelize the masses by effectively using the media.

It seemed to us that the intention of this powerful group will not be so much to spread the good news about Jesus (that would be a good thing). It is more likely that they would be using the power of the media to influence the masses to counteract the bad image from all the sexual abuse scandals. This gets into a very gray area.

Xavier offered his opinion that the Legion is fueled by a persecution complex toward the outside world and the media and that their approach (rather than making real change) is to give the outward appearance that they are super achievers when they are not. With this new initiative the Legion may be attempting to progressively transmit its persecution complex and (deceptive) policies to the Vatican officials. As this happens, it could reduce the need for positive change in the Church and instead serve to bring about improvement only in the efficiency of covering up scandals.

Is the Legion being put into a position where they can remake the Church over into its (Maciel?s) own image? That is a scary thought.

Xavier advises that the Legion is taking over more control of the Vatican information services. The general manager of telecommunications for the Vatican is a Legionary (Father Fernando Vergez Alzaga: Click here.

Zenit, which is Legion owned and controlled has become a semi official news agency of the Vatican (they would tell you that it is not true, because they are independent, and work with other communities (which may be true)… But Jesus Colina is an ex LC, still under the influence of the Legion. Look at how Zenit treated the Maciel issue and how much the teachers of the CES of Rome are frequently interviewed about bioethics for instance). The Spanish version of L?Osservatore Romano is directed by a Legionary (Arturo Gutierrez:Click here. The most important web portal of the Catholic Church in Spanish (catholic.net) is directed by Legionaries.

We noted that the author of the French article used some colorful wording to describe Fr Maciel and he mentioned that his Legion established a vast system of corruption festering in the Vatican. Xavier explained that some of these people are known to be sharks who find in this kind of sponsorship an opportunity to obtain the blessing of the Church without having to make any serious examination of conscience. They are able to purchase an outward appearance of goodness.

The hook that is being used in the media campaign is that the foundation of our civilization is at risk. We wonder if there is more risk from the media trying to make the Church look bad or from this group of fricards working together with the Legion (with full support from the Holy See) to achieve whatever agenda they might have.

The article mentions that one of the cardinals made a statement: It?s a mafia. We asked Xavier if he thought this applied to the group of benefactors or to the Legion. Xavier said the comment referred to the Legion.

The French article refers to the current weakness of the Pope. There is no explanation for this worrisome item of information. Is there some issue we are unaware of that is allowing the Legion to overcome any resistance from the Holy Father, who has bravely taken on the Legion and their founder for several years?

The article ends with a second comparison of the Legion to the Mafia and to the Phoenix rising from the ashes.

For those who believed that the Legion ship was slowly sinking, this article raises new concerns that the Legion may be getting a strangle hold on Vatican power to lead the church in a wrong direction. Fortunately we know that the good guys win in the end but the road ahead may be bumpy for a while.

Power Money and Mind Control

Could power, money and mind control be the missing charisms for the Legion and for Regnum Christi? The New Oxford Review opines that these “three concepts best describe the modus operandi of the Legion.”

The article confirms recent statements made by the Associated Press regarding the voluntary renouncement of decision making capacity leading to a “zombie” like existence and mentions the excessive power that has been concentrated in the hands of two leaders, particularly Luis Garza Medina. It describes the difficulties facing Cardinal Designate DePaolis as he moves ahead with his mission to resurrect the Legion (and Regnum Christi) and questions how they will be able to attract new members.

An excellent example was provided of the power plays that were utilised by Fr. Maciel and his very powerful and influential associates, including the heads of multinational companies and politicians who went to great lengths to save Fr. Maciel?s reputation and keep the truth from becoming publicly aired in Mexico.
